Povidone-Iodine 5% or 6% Ointment: Therapeutically Povidone-Iodine 5% Ointment is used as an adjunct to systemic therapy in following conditions- Primary or secondary topical infections, infected surgical incisions, infected decubitus or stasis ulcers, pyodermas, secondarily infected dermatoses, and infected traumatic lesions. ProphylacticallyThis is used to prevent microbial contamination in burns, incisions and other topical lesions; for degerming skin in hyperalimentation and catheter care. The use of Povidone-Iodine 5% Ointment for abrasions, minor cuts and wounds, may prevent the development of infections and permit wound healing.

Povidone-Iodine 1% Mouthwash Gargle: This is used for the treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx. It is also used for oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery.

Povidone-Iodine 10% Solution: For use as an antiseptic skin cleanser for major and minor surgical procedures where a quick drying effect is desired. It is also used in treating primary or secondary topical infections, infected surgical incisions, infected decubitus or stasis ulcers, pyodermas, secondarily infected dermatoses, and infected traumatic lesions. Prophylactically it is used to prevent microbial contamination in burns, incisions and other topical lesions; tor degerming skin in hyperalimentation and catheter care. The use of Povidone-Iodine 10% Solution for abrasions, minor cuts and wounds, may prevent the development of infections and permit wound healing.

Iodine compounds (Anti-septic Preparations)

Povidone-Iodine contains Povidone-Iodine which is a stable chemical complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and elemental iodine. Povidone-Iodine shows non-selective broad spectrum germicidal action and acts as bactericide (both gram-positive and gram negative), fungicide, virucide, sporicide, amebicide, insecticide and nematocide and is effective in dilute solution. Povidone-Iodine does not develop resistance in microorganisms. Povidone-Iodine is safer and easier to use than classic iodine preparations and has low systemic toxicity. Unlike iodine solutions, it is nonsensitizing and does not cause pain when applied to wounds or mucous membranes. Povidone-Iodine will not permanently stain skin, natural fibres or hard surfaces. Povidone-Iodine is less irritating to the skin than conventional iodine preparations.

Povidone-Iodine 5% or 6% Ointment: For the treatment of infection: Apply once or twice daily or at dressing changes for a maximum of 14 days. For the prevention of infection: Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary. The affected skin should be cleaned and dried. Apply ointment to the affected area. May be covered with a dressing or bandage.Povidone-Iodine 1% Mouthwash Gargle: Adults and children over 6 years of age: Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water. Gargle or rinse with up to 10 ml for up to 30 seconds without swallowing. Repeat up to four times daily for up to 14 consecutive days or as directed.

Povidone-Iodine 10% Solution: Apply full strength as an antiseptic skin cleanser.

Absorption of iodine from Povidone-Iodine may interfere with thyroid function tests. Contamination with Povidone-Iodine of several types of tests for the detection of occult blood in faeces or blood in urine may produce false-positive results.

Povidone-Iodine 5% or 6% Ointment: It is contraindicated in known or suspected iodine hypersensitivity. Regular use is contraindicated in patients or users with thyroid disorders (in particular nodular colloid goitre, endemic goitre and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis). Not for use in infants under 2 years. Special caution is needed when regular applications to broken skin are made to patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency. Regular use should be avoided in patients on concurrent lithium therapy.Povidone-Iodine 1% Mouthwash Gargle: Povidone-Iodine 1% Mouthwash Gargle is not for use in children under 6 years of age and in patients with a known or suspected iodine hypersensitivity. Regular use is contraindicated in patients or users with thyroid disorders or in pregnant or lactating women. Regular use should be avoided as prolonged use may lead to the absorption of a significant amount of iodine. Do not use for more than 14 days. If sores or ulcers in the mouth do not heal within 14 days seek medical or dental advice. Regular use should be avoided in patients on concurrent lithium therapy.

Povidone-lodine 10% Solution: Known or suspected iodine hypersensitivity to iodine. Regular use is contraindicated in patients or users with thyroid disorders (in particular nodular colloid goitre, endemic goitre and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis). Povidone-Iodine is not recommended for regular use in neonates and is contraindicated in very low birth weight infants (below 1500 grams). Special caution is needed when regular applications to broken skin are made to patients with pre existing renal insufficiency. Regular use should be avoided in patients on concurrent lithium therapy. This preparation is flammable and caution is advised during surgical procedures involving hot wire cautery or diathermy.

Povidone-lodine 5% or 6% Ointment and Povidone-Iodine 10% Solution: Povidone-Iodine may produce local skin reactions although it is less irritant than iodine. The application of Povidone Iodine to large wounds or severe burns may produce systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia and impairment of renal function.Povidone-Iodine 1% Mouthwash Gargle: Idiosyncratic mucosal irritation and hypersensitivity reactions may occur. Excessive absorption of iodine may produce systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia and impairment of renal function.
