What is melasma?
Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by the development of brown or gray-brown patches on the face, particularly on the forehead, cheeks, nose, upper lip, and chin. These patches are typically symmetrical and may have an irregular shape.
The primary causes of melasma include exposure to ultraviolet (UV) sunlight and hormonal influences, such as pregnancy or the use of hormonal birth control. It is believed to be related to an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Genetics and family history may also play a role in its development1.
Although melasma can affect people of any gender and age, it is often referred to as “the mask of pregnancy” as it often occurs to women during pregnancy or while taking birth control pills.
